Brush your teeth and gargle with baking soda (Sodium Bicarbonate).

Wet your tooth brush with baking soda and brush your teeth and then mix approximately one teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water and gargle and rinse you mouth with it 1-2 time a day.

Chew mint leaf.

Chewing mint leaves at least once per day is said to help with bad breath.

Drinking unsweetened herbal tea.

Drinking unsweetened herbal tea in the morning instead of coffee keeps your mouth from getting dry and also (depending on the tea) should not have the acidity that the coffee does.

Drink plenty of water.

Drinking water throughout the day (preferably purified) helps to keep your mouth (as well as the rest of your body) hydrated and possibly washes out food particles from meals.

Warm lemon juice and honey mixed with warm water.

This concoction is to be taken before bed and in the morning to help with mouth odor.

A mouthwash made with hydrogen peroxide 3%, baking soda, water and salt.

One part water, one part hydrogen peroxide 3% solution along with a pinch of baking soda and salt. Use this as a mouthwash, do not drink it. This is said to very effective against bad breath.

Oil of oregano.

Two to three drops of the oil of oregano in your juice or water daily can help with your breath.

Brush and floss your tenth after ever meal.

Good old fashion oral hygiene. The old standby that your mother told you to do does work if you do it.

Chewing a clove after every meal.

Some people do not like to chew a clove as it is spicy. In that case, leave it in your mouth for several minutes.

Drink and gargle with lemon water.

I drink a little lemon water every day. I believe it helps not only bad breath, but also digestive functions.

Eating apples to remove bacteria from your mouth.

Some people believe that apples cleanse the mouth and promote fresher breath.

Chewing and eating parsley.

There must be a reason so many restaurants serve parsley on their plates. Know to freshen breath, this is an old standby remedy.

Using a tongue cleaner (scraper) or spoon to clean your tongue.

Most of the bacteria in the mouth that cause bad breath are on your tongue. There are tongue scrapers that you can buy or you could use a spoon to scrape your tongue. Try to get as far back on your tongue as possible and get any white film that is on your tongue.

What do I do with halitosis at work?

Question: What do I do with halitosis at work?

I don’t know what to do. Jobs are hard to come by now days and I finally got one that I really like and my boss has horrible halitosis.

She and I have to work together quite a bit and when she talks to me I almost get sick to my stomach from the smell of her breath. She is a really nice person but has a terrible bad breath problem.

I would really like to tell her that she needs to do something about this because I don’t know if I am going to be able to take it much longer. I feel that we are friends, but not close friends and she is my boss and is responsible for my evaluations.

I really need and like the job and I don’t know what to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer:

That is a bad spot to be put in. These aren’t normal economic time and it is not like you can just go out easily and replace a job, especially one that you like.

You might make a hint such as when you are together have breath mints with you, put one in your mouth and ask if she would like one. Even if she says no, it might get here thinking that maybe she needs one. If she asks whether she needs one, it is up to you to decide if you feel brave enough to say yes.

If you are in a big company, you might want to see if you can arrange a confidential meeting with her boss to discuss the situation. I’m sure her boss is aware of the problem if her boss works in close proximity with her. You do take a pretty big chance in doing that, because it might get out and your boss might feel that you went “over her head” about this problem. There are always office politics to consider.

The final way might be to start looking for a new job, although I would consider this a last ditch effort. This is not an easy situation that you have yourself in.
